The clock illuminated the darkness as it shined 2:14 AM. Fiona sat quietly on her bed as she listened for her father to go into his bedroom for the night. The click of his door signaled her that it was time. Quickly, yet quietly, she moved off her bed and grabbed her car keys, stopping momentarily in front of her dresser.
A girl stared back at her in the mirror with tear stained cheeks and a ripe bruise forming under her right eye. Fiona sniffled as the realization of what she was about to do came over her. There was no other choice. She knew that, too, because she had spent her entire life searching for a way out. This was the only conclusion she could come to.
As quiet as she could, Fiona opened her bedroom door and tip toed down the hallway towards the front door. Unfortunately she wasn't quiet enough.
"Fiona!" her father yelled as he swung open his bedroom door. It slammed against the opposite wall as he staggered out, still buzzing on alcohol.
Her heart jumped to her throat as she ran for the front door. She could her her father thumping behind her as she made it out to the front lawn.
"Where in the hell are you going?!" her father yelled. "You can't leave!" He stood stupidly on the front porch, confused by his daughter's actions.
Fiona didn't turn around to look at him as she hopped in her car, turned the ignition and sped off into the darkness. She had a plan and no one was going to stop her. This was her destiny.
